The University is established as an offshoot of the University of Mysore for the improvement of Education in the region of Bangalore and Kolar. The main campus moved to the Jnana Bharathi Campus in 1973 where most of the University Administration takes place. The University has about 600 colleges affiliated to it. (April 2007)
